Variational Omni vs Coinbase International: which to use

Variational Omni vs Coinbase International is a self-custody decentralized exchange against an account at a company. On Variational Omni you trade from your own wallet without ID, at 0 bp maker and 0 bp taker, with quotes from a market maker. Coinbase International requires ID and a suitability check, holds your funds in an account, and charges 2 bp maker and 4 bp taker on a central limit order book. Both offer up to 50x. Variational Omni lists 557 markets and Coinbase International 131. Custody, ID and fees decide it for most traders.

How each exchange is built

Variational Omni is a decentralized exchange (DEX) on Arbitrum. You trade from a self-custody wallet. It uses request-for-quote: a market maker quotes each trade, and there is no public order book. The price you get is the quote for your size, so there is no book to read for depth.

Coinbase International is a centralized exchange (CEX): you open an account with the company, and the account holds your funds. It matches orders on a central limit order book, where a limit order can rest until it is filled.

Fees and what they mean

Variational Omni's base tier is 0 bp maker and 0 bp taker, per Variational's fee page. Coinbase International's base tier is 2 bp maker and 4 bp taker, per Coinbase International's fee page.

A market order pays the taker fee to open and again to close: 0 bp per round trip on Variational Omni, 8 bp on Coinbase International. A limit order that rests on the book pays the maker fee instead. Coinbase International charges 2 bp for it, and Variational Omni's maker fee is also 0 bp.

Fees are only part of a trade's cost. Slippage, the price you move by eating through the order book, grows with size. The round trip in the cost table above includes it, which the fee alone does not show. Read the table at your own size.

Markets and leverage

As of 1 October 2026 Variational Omni lists 557 active perps, 121 of them stocks, commodities, FX or other real-world assets. Coinbase International lists 131, 34 of them real-world assets.

Both exchanges allow up to 50x on their highest-leverage markets; most markets allow less. Coinbase International pays funding every hour on every market. Variational Omni pays every 1 hour, 4 hours or 8 hours depending on the market, so check a market's interval before you hold it. An hourly market settles 24 times a day, an 8-hour market three times. A positive rate means longs pay shorts. The list further down this page shows the markets both exchanges have and each one's funding rate.

Who can use them

Variational Omni asks for no ID. It is not for US or Canadian persons, Taiwan or sanctioned regions. Coinbase International requires KYC: ID and a suitability check. Its perps are for eligible non-US countries, not for US or UK retail.

Token and points

Variational Omni has no token yet, and as of 19 September 2026 its points and airdrop program was "Active". The airdrops page lists the programs running. The exchange runs no vault that arb.sh tracks.

Reading the numbers on this page

Variational Omni publishes open interest as the sum of traders' longs and shorts, against a pool or dealer. Coinbase International publishes one side of open positions. For the same positions Variational Omni's figure reads about twice as large, so the open interest row and chart above are not a like-for-like comparison of size.

Neither exchange has a TVL row or chart. DefiLlama has no figure for Variational Omni, and a centralized exchange such as Coinbase International publishes none. Because Variational Omni quotes each trade, the order-book depth row in the Head to head table has no public book to read for it, so compare cost in the cost table instead.
