Coinbase International requires ID and a suitability check, holds your funds in an account, and charges 2 bp maker and 4 bp taker at base tier, with up to 50x. How each exchange is built

edgeX is a decentralized exchange (DEX) that runs on edgeX L2. You trade from a self-custody wallet, with a wallet or MPC login. It matches orders on a central limit order book.

Coinbase International is a centralized exchange (CEX): you open an account with the company, and the account holds your funds. It also matches orders on a central limit order book.

For you, the difference is custody. On edgeX you trade from your own self-custody wallet. On Coinbase International you log in to an account and the company holds the balance.

Fees and what they mean

edgeX's base tier is 4 bp maker and 4.5 bp taker, per edgeX's fee source. Coinbase International's base tier is 2 bp maker and 4 bp taker, per Coinbase International's fee page.

A market order pays the taker fee to open and again to close: 9 bp per round trip on edgeX, 8 bp on Coinbase International. A limit order that rests on the book pays the maker fee instead, 4 bp on edgeX and 2 bp on Coinbase International.

Taker fee is only part of the cost of a market order. Slippage, the price you move by eating through the order book, grows with size. The round trip in the cost table above adds both at each size from $1k to $5M, and every exchange's trading cost sits on one page.

Markets and leverage

Coinbase International pays every hour on every market. Funding is the periodic payment between longs and shorts, and a positive rate means longs pay shorts. An hourly interval settles 24 times a day and a 4-hour interval 6 times. The list further down this page shows the markets both exchanges have and each one's funding rate.

Who can use them

edgeX asks for no ID: a wallet or MPC login works. It is closed to US and Ontario residents and sanctioned countries, and it forbids VPNs. Coinbase International requires ID and a suitability check. Its perps are for eligible non-US countries, and it is closed to US and UK retail.

Reading the numbers on this page

Coinbase International publishes no TVL, as is usual for a centralized exchange, so that row and chart show edgeX alone. For edgeX, TVL is DefiLlama's figure for the deposits its bridge holds.
