Variational Omni or Lighter: which to use

Variational Omni vs Lighter is quotes against an order book, both without fees by default. Variational, on Arbitrum, fills each trade at a quote from a market maker, has no public book, lists 0 bp fees and 557 markets, 121 of them real-world assets. Lighter, on zkLighter, matches orders on a public book; its default Standard account pays no fees but its market orders wait 300 ms, and a Premium account pays 0.4 bp maker and 2.8 bp taker. Lighter lists 194 markets, 75 of them real-world assets. Both allow up to 50x and neither asks for ID. Pick Lighter to rest limit orders on a book, Variational for the longer list.

How each exchange is built

Both are decentralized exchanges you trade from your own wallet. Lighter matches orders on a central limit order book: bids and asks rest on a public book until they fill, so you can see the depth and place a limit order at your price. Variational works by request for quote: a market maker quotes each trade and you take the quote. There is no public book to rest an order on.

Fees and what they mean

Variational lists 0 bp maker and 0 bp taker, per Variational's fee page. With quotes, the cost of a trade is the distance between the quoted price and the market, which is part of the quote rather than a separate fee.

Lighter's default Standard account pays 0 bp maker and 0 bp taker, and its market orders wait 300 ms. A Premium account waits 140 ms and pays 0.4 bp maker and 2.8 bp taker, 5.6 bp per round trip. Both tiers are on Lighter's fee page.

With fees at zero on both, the cost table above is what separates them: what opening and closing a position costs at each size, Lighter's from its order book and Variational's from its quotes. Every exchange's trading cost is compared on one page.

Markets and leverage

As of 1 October 2026 Variational lists 557 active perps, 121 of them stocks, commodities, FX or other real-world assets. Lighter lists 194, 75 of them real-world assets. The list further down this page shows which markets both exchanges have and each one's funding rate.

Both allow up to 50x on their highest-leverage markets; most markets allow less. Lighter pays funding every hour on every market. Variational pays every hour, 4 hours or 8 hours depending on the market, so check a market's interval before you hold it: an hourly market settles 24 times a day, an 8-hour market three times.

Who can use them

Neither asks for ID. Variational is closed to US and Canadian persons, Taiwan and sanctioned regions. Lighter's card deposit on-ramp is optional, and it is closed to the US, Canada, the UK, China, Russia, Ukraine and sanctioned countries.

Vaults, tokens and points

Lighter runs LLP (Lighter Liquidity Provider), a vault that makes markets and takes liquidations, so its depositors carry the traders' profit and loss. It takes USDC, has no lock and charges no operator fee. Variational runs no vault we track.

Lighter's token is $LIT; Variational has no token yet. As of 19 September 2026 Lighter's points program was in Season 3 and Variational's was active; the points and airdrops page tracks both.

Reading the numbers on this page

Variational publishes open interest as the sum of its traders' longs and shorts. Lighter publishes one side. For the same positions Variational's figure reads about twice as large, so the open interest row and chart above are not a like-for-like comparison of size.

Variational has no public book, so it has no book depth figure; its cost above comes from its quotes. It publishes no TVL either, so that row and chart show Lighter alone, as DefiLlama's figure for its bridge.

Which one fits you

  • Pick Lighter if you rest limit orders on a book and want to see its depth before you trade.
  • Pick Lighter if you want a vault without a lock, or every market on an hourly funding schedule.
  • Pick Lighter if you want a Premium tier with posted fees for faster market orders.
  • Pick Variational Omni if you want 557 markets, 121 of them real-world assets, on one exchange.
  • Pick Variational if you take fills at a quote and want no fee and no account tier to choose.
  • Pick Variational if you are in the UK, which Lighter is closed to.
