allHyperliquid or Variational Omni: which to use
Hyperliquid vs Variational Omni is an order book against quotes. Hyperliquid matches orders on a public order book on its own chain and charges 1.5 bp maker and 4.5 bp taker. Variational Omni, on Arbitrum, fills each trade at a quote from a market maker, has no public book and lists 0 bp fees. Variational lists 557 markets, 121 of them real-world assets, at up to 50x; Hyperliquid's own book lists 178 crypto markets at up to 40x, with stocks and commodities on its HIP-3 exchanges. Neither asks for ID. Pick by how you trade: resting limit orders need a book, one-click fills at a quote do not.
How each exchange is built
Both are decentralized exchanges you trade from your own wallet. Hyperliquid runs on its own chain, Hyperliquid L1, and matches orders on a central limit order book: bids and asks rest on a public book until they fill, so you can see the depth before you trade. Variational Omni runs on Arbitrum and works by request for quote: a market maker quotes each trade and you take the quote. There is no public order book to rest a limit order on.
Hyperliquid also lets other teams deploy their own perp exchanges on its chain under HIP-3, traded from the same Hyperliquid account. The live ones include tradeXYZ (110 markets), Paragon (29 markets), Entropy (8 markets) and Markets by Kinetiq (5 markets), and most of Hyperliquid's stock and commodity perps are there. Variational keeps all of its markets on one exchange.
Fees and what they mean
Hyperliquid's base tier is 1.5 bp maker and 4.5 bp taker, per Hyperliquid's fee page. A market order pays 4.5 bp to open and 4.5 bp to close, 9 bp per round trip; a limit order that rests on the book pays 1.5 bp.
Variational lists 0 bp maker and 0 bp taker, per Variational's fee page. With quotes, the cost of a trade is the distance between the quoted price and the market, which is part of the quote rather than a separate fee.
That is why the cost table above matters more than the fee rows for this pair. It shows what opening and closing a position costs on each exchange at each size: Hyperliquid's from its order book, Variational's from its quotes. Every exchange's trading cost is compared on one page.
Markets and leverage
As of 1 October 2026 Variational lists 557 active perps, 121 of them stocks, commodities, FX or other real-world assets. Hyperliquid's own book lists 178, all crypto; its stocks and commodities are on the HIP-3 exchanges above.
Variational allows up to 50x and Hyperliquid up to 40x on their highest-leverage markets; most markets allow less. Hyperliquid pays funding every hour on every market. Variational pays every hour, 4 hours or 8 hours depending on the market, so check a market's interval before you hold it. The list further down this page shows the markets both exchanges have and each one's funding rate.
Who can use them
Neither asks for ID. Hyperliquid accepts any EVM wallet or an email login and is closed to the US, Ontario and sanctioned countries. Variational is closed to US and Canadian persons, Taiwan and sanctioned regions.
Vaults, tokens and points
Hyperliquid runs HLP (Hyperliquidity Provider), a vault that makes markets and takes liquidations, so its depositors carry the traders' profit and loss. It takes USDC, locks each deposit for 4 days and charges no fee. Variational runs no vault we track.
Hyperliquid's token is $HYPE; Variational has no token yet. As of 19 September 2026 Hyperliquid's points program was in Season 2 and Variational's was active; the points and airdrops page tracks both.
Reading the numbers on this page
Both exchanges publish open interest as longs plus shorts, so the open interest row and chart above compare like with like. Variational has no public book, so it has no book depth figure; its cost above comes from its quotes. Variational publishes no TVL, so that row and chart show Hyperliquid alone, as DefiLlama's figure for its bridge.
