OKX or Phemex: which to use

OKX vs Phemex is a comparison of two centralized exchanges that both match on an order book and both require KYC. Phemex charges a lower maker fee (1 bp against 2 bp) and allows higher leverage (150x against 100x). OKX charges a lower taker fee (5 bp against 6 bp) and lists 480 perp markets against 132, with 191 of them real-world assets. Fee type, market count and leverage decide it for most traders. Limit-order traders who want 150x fit Phemex. Market-order traders who want stocks and commodities next to crypto fit OKX.

How each exchange is built

OKX is a centralized exchange (CEX): you open an account with the company, and the account holds your funds. It matches orders on a central limit order book.

Phemex is built the same way: a CEX account that holds your funds, with a central limit order book. The build does not separate them. Fees, markets, leverage and access do.

Fees: maker against taker

OKX's base tier is 2 bp maker and 5 bp taker, per OKX's fee source. Phemex's base tier is 1 bp maker and 6 bp taker, per Phemex's fee page. One basis point (bp) is 0.01% of the position.

A market order pays the taker fee on entry and again on exit. That is 10 bp per round trip on OKX and 12 bp on Phemex. A limit order that rests on the book pays the maker fee instead: 2 bp on OKX and 1 bp on Phemex. If you mostly rest orders on the book, Phemex's maker rate is the lower one. If you mostly use market orders, OKX's taker rate is.

Fees are only part of the cost of a trade. Slippage is the price you move by eating through the order book, and it grows with size. The cost table above adds the taker fee twice to the measured slippage at each size from $1k to $5M. Every exchange's trading cost is compared on one page.

Markets, leverage and funding

As of 1 October 2026, OKX lists 480 active perp markets and Phemex lists 132. Of those, 191 on OKX and 67 on Phemex are stocks, commodities, FX or other real-world assets. OKX therefore has more crypto markets and more real-world asset markets than Phemex, in absolute count.

The highest leverage on any market is 100x on OKX and 150x on Phemex. Most markets on both allow less, so check the cap on the market you plan to trade rather than the headline figure.

Both pay funding every 4 hours or 8 hours, depending on the market. Funding is the periodic payment between longs and shorts, and a positive rate means longs pay shorts. A 4-hour market settles 6 times a day and an 8-hour market 3 times. The interval changes how often a held position pays or receives funding, so look it up before you hold. The list further down this page shows the markets both exchanges have, each one's funding rate and the Net 7d figure.

What each requires before you trade

KYC is required on both. OKX asks for advanced verification before you trade, deposit or withdraw. On Phemex, KYC covers spot and futures trading, and an unverified account cannot withdraw at all. In both cases, plan on completing verification before you move funds.

Tokens

OKX's token is $OKB.

Reading the numbers on this page

Both exchanges publish open interest as one side of open positions. The open interest row and chart above are therefore a like-for-like comparison of position size, with no doubling to adjust for.

Neither exchange has a TVL row or chart, because centralized exchanges publish no TVL. Compare them on volume, open interest and the cost table instead. Those figures refresh every minute, so this article does not repeat them.
