Variational Omni vs Deribit: which to use

Variational Omni vs Deribit is a decentralized exchange against a centralized one. On Variational Omni you trade from a self-custody wallet without ID, at 0 bp maker and 0 bp taker, with quotes from a market maker instead of a public order book. Deribit matches on a central limit order book, holds your funds in an account, requires ID before any deposit, and charges 1.5 bp maker and 3.5 bp taker. Both offer up to 50x. Fees, custody and ID decide it for most traders.

How each exchange is built

Variational Omni is a decentralized exchange (DEX) on Arbitrum. You trade from a self-custody wallet. It uses request-for-quote matching: a market maker quotes each trade, and there is no public order book.

Deribit is a centralized exchange (CEX): you open an account with the company, and the account holds your funds. It matches orders on a central limit order book.

For you this means a different kind of price. On Deribit you see resting orders and can place a limit order into the book. On Variational Omni a market maker quotes each trade, and there is no public order book.

Fees and what they mean

Variational Omni's base tier is 0 bp maker and 0 bp taker, per Variational's fee page. Deribit's base tier is 1.5 bp maker and 3.5 bp taker, read from Deribit's API, which has no fee page to link.

A market order pays the taker fee to open and again to close: 0 bp per round trip on Variational Omni, 7 bp on Deribit. A limit order that rests on the book pays the maker fee instead, which is 1.5 bp on Deribit. Variational Omni's maker fee is also 0 bp.

The fee is only part of a trade's cost. Slippage, the price you move by eating through the order book, grows with size. The round trip in the cost table above includes both, and the fee alone does not show it.

Markets and leverage

As of 1 October 2026 Variational Omni lists 557 active perps, 121 of them stocks, commodities, FX or other real-world assets. Deribit lists 134, 34 of them real-world assets. Both exchanges offer up to 50x on their highest-leverage market, and most markets allow less.

Funding differs by interval. Deribit pays every 1 hour on every market, so a position settles 24 times a day. Variational Omni pays every 1 hour, 4 hours or 8 hours depending on the market, so check a market's interval before you hold it: an 8-hour market settles three times a day. The list further down this page shows the markets both exchanges have and each one's funding rate.

Who can use them

Variational Omni asks for no ID. It is not for US or Canadian persons, and it is closed to Taiwan and sanctioned regions.

Deribit requires KYC: ID, proof of address and a financial profile before any deposit. It is closed to the US, Canada, Japan and retail UK clients.

Token and points

Variational Omni has no token yet. Its points and airdrop program was "Active" as of 19 September 2026, and the airdrops page lists programs running and tokens launched. Variational Omni runs no vault that arb.sh tracks.

Reading the numbers on this page

Variational Omni publishes open interest as the sum of traders' longs and shorts, against a pool or dealer. Deribit publishes one side of open positions. For the same positions Variational Omni's figure reads about twice as large, so the open interest row and chart above are not a like-for-like comparison of size.

Neither exchange has a TVL row or chart: DefiLlama has no figure for Variational Omni, and centralized exchanges such as Deribit publish none. For the fee and slippage cost of both, see every exchange's trading cost.
