Variational Omni vs Aster: which to use

Variational Omni vs Aster comes down to fees, leverage and how orders are matched. Variational Omni charges 0 bp maker and 0 bp taker and fills each trade from a market maker's quote on Arbitrum. Aster charges 0 bp maker and 4 bp taker, matches on a public order book on BNB Chain, and offers up to 300x against 50x. Neither asks for ID to trade. Pick Variational Omni to keep both fees at zero, Aster if you want a public book, higher leverage or its liquidity pool.

How each exchange is built

Both are decentralized exchanges (DEX): you trade from your own wallet, not from an account held by a company. Variational Omni runs on Arbitrum. Aster runs on BNB Chain.

The matching differs. Variational Omni uses request-for-quote: a market maker quotes each trade, and there is no public order book. Aster uses a central limit order book, so resting orders sit on a public book until they are filled.

For the trader, this changes what you can check before a trade. On Aster you can read the book and see where your order would fill. On Variational Omni you get the quote for your size and decide whether to accept it.

Fees and what they mean

Variational Omni's base tier is 0 bp maker and 0 bp taker, per its fee page. Aster's base tier is 0 bp maker and 4 bp taker, per its fee page.

A market order pays the taker fee on entry and again on exit. On Aster that is 8 bp in fees for a round trip. On Variational Omni it is 0 bp. A limit order that rests on Aster's book pays the maker fee, which is 0 bp.

The fee is only part of a trade's cost. The rest is slippage: the price you move by eating through the order book, which grows with size. The cost table above adds both for each size, and every exchange's trading cost is compared on one page.

Markets and leverage

As of 1 October 2026, Variational Omni lists 557 active perps, 121 of them stocks, commodities, FX or other real-world assets. Aster lists 588, 133 of them real-world assets.

Variational Omni allows up to 50x on its highest-leverage market. Aster allows up to 300x. Most markets on both allow less, so check the market you trade.

Both pay funding every 1h, 4h or 8h depending on the market. On a 1-hour market a position settles funding 24 times a day. On an 8-hour market it settles three times a day. The markets both exchanges list are further down this page, with each one's funding rate.

Who can use them

Variational Omni asks for no ID. It is not for US or Canadian persons, Taiwan or sanctioned regions.

Aster asks for no ID to trade, though its terms keep a right to limited checks. It is not for the US, Canada, the UK, China, Russia, Ukraine or sanctioned countries.

Vaults, tokens and points

Aster runs ALP (Aster Liquidity Pool). It takes the other side of traders' positions, so depositors carry the traders' profit and loss. Burning ALP carries a 48-hour lock, and the mint and burn fee is 0.25% ± 0.05%. The vaults page tracks it. Variational Omni has no vault that arb.sh tracks.

Aster's token is $ASTER. Variational Omni has no token yet.

As of 19 September 2026, Variational Omni's points and airdrop program was "Active" and Aster's was at "Stage 5". The airdrops page lists programs running.

Reading the numbers on this page

Variational Omni publishes open interest as the sum of traders' longs and shorts, against a pool or dealer. Aster publishes one side of open positions. For the same positions, Variational Omni's figure reads about twice as large, so the open interest row and chart above are not a like-for-like comparison of size.

TVL is shown for Aster only: DefiLlama's figure for the deposits its bridge holds. Variational Omni has no TVL row or chart, because DefiLlama has no figure for it.
