Hyperliquid or Phemex: which to use

Hyperliquid vs Phemex is a decentralized exchange against a centralized one. On Hyperliquid you trade from your own wallet without ID, at 1.5 bp maker and 4.5 bp taker, up to 40x. Phemex holds your funds in an account, requires KYC, charges 1 bp maker and 6 bp taker, and offers up to 150x. Hyperliquid's own book lists crypto only, with stocks and commodities on HIP-3 exchanges. As of 1 October 2026, Phemex lists 67 real-world asset markets on one exchange. Custody, ID and the leverage ceiling are the main differences between them.

How each exchange is built

Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange (DEX) that runs on its own chain, Hyperliquid L1. You trade from a self-custody wallet. Orders match on a central limit order book.

Other teams can deploy their own perp exchanges on Hyperliquid's chain. This is HIP-3. You trade them from the same Hyperliquid account and wallet. The live ones include tradeXYZ (110 markets), Paragon (29 markets), Entropy (8 markets) and Markets by Kinetiq (5 markets). Most of Hyperliquid's stock and commodity perps sit on these HIP-3 exchanges.

Phemex is a centralized exchange (CEX). You open an account with the company, and the account holds your funds. It also matches orders on a central limit order book.

For the trader, the difference is custody. On Hyperliquid your wallet holds the funds. On Phemex the account at the company does.

Fees and what they mean

Hyperliquid's base tier is 1.5 bp maker and 4.5 bp taker, per Hyperliquid's fee page. Phemex's base tier is 1 bp maker and 6 bp taker, per Phemex's fee page. One basis point (bp) is 0.01% of the position.

A market order pays the taker fee to open and again to close. That is 9 bp per round trip on Hyperliquid and 12 bp on Phemex. A limit order that rests on the book pays the maker fee instead: 1.5 bp on Hyperliquid and 1 bp on Phemex. If you mostly take liquidity, Hyperliquid's rate is lower. If you mostly rest orders on the book, Phemex's is.

The fee is only part of a trade's cost. Slippage is the price you move by eating through the order book, and it grows with size. The cost table above adds the taker fee twice and the measured slippage at each size from $1k to $5M. Every exchange's trading cost is also compared on one page.

Markets and leverage

As of 1 October 2026, Hyperliquid lists 178 active perpetual markets on its own book, all crypto. Phemex lists 132, of which 67 are stocks, commodities, FX or other real-world assets. Hyperliquid's stocks and commodities are on the HIP-3 exchanges above, traded from the same account.

Phemex offers up to 150x on its highest-leverage market and Hyperliquid up to 40x. Most markets on both allow less, so check the limit for the market you trade.

Funding is the periodic payment between longs and shorts. A positive rate means longs pay shorts. Hyperliquid pays funding every hour on every market. Phemex pays every 4 hours or every 8 hours, depending on the market. An hourly market settles 24 times a day, a 4-hour market six times and an 8-hour market three times. A shorter interval means a rate change shows up in your balance sooner. The list further down this page shows the markets both exchanges have and each one's funding rate.

Who can use them

Hyperliquid asks for no ID. Any EVM wallet or an email login works. The app is closed to the US, Ontario and sanctioned countries.

Phemex requires KYC. KYC is needed for spot and futures trading, and an unverified account cannot withdraw at all.

Hyperliquid's vault, token and points

Hyperliquid runs HLP (Hyperliquidity Provider), a vault operated by the exchange. Deposits are in USDC. HLP makes markets and takes liquidations, so depositors carry the traders' profit and loss. Each deposit is locked for 4 days, and the vault charges no fee.

Hyperliquid's token is $HYPE. As of 19 September 2026, its points and airdrop program was in "Season 2".

Reading the numbers on this page

The two exchanges count open interest differently. Hyperliquid publishes longs plus shorts, both sides of every position. Phemex publishes one side of open positions. For the same positions, Hyperliquid's figure reads about twice as large. The open interest row in the Head to head table and the open interest chart above are therefore not a like-for-like comparison of size.

TVL on arb.sh is DefiLlama's figure for the deposits Hyperliquid's bridge holds. Phemex is a centralized exchange and publishes none, so the TVL row and chart show Hyperliquid alone.

Which one fits you

  • Pick Hyperliquid if you want to keep funds in your own wallet and trade without ID.
  • Pick Hyperliquid if you trade mostly with market orders: 4.5 bp taker against 6 bp.

  • Pick Phemex if you need more than 40x, up to 150x on its highest-leverage market.
