Questions about these charts
Where do the daily figures come from?
From 18 Sep 2026, from each exchange's own API, read every minute; a day is its figure at 00:00 UTC. Before that, daily volume is the sum of each exchange's daily candles (markets delisted since are missing), and open interest and TVL are DefiLlama's, the open interest scaled to the exchange's own figure.
Why do older days have no share of DEX volume?
A day carries a share only when every DEX with 1% or more of DEX volume now has a figure for it. Before the younger exchanges' histories start the total is too small and every share would read too high, so those days are left empty.
What is the cost to trade?
The taker fee both ways plus the order-book slippage of a market buy and a market sell of the size from the mid, on that day's median order book. Per exchange it is the median of its markets, weighted by each market's volume that day, with at least 3 markets; the fee is today's where its history is not known. With an asset picked, it is that asset's largest market on each exchange instead of the median.
How is the vault return worked out?
The change in each pool's share price over 30 days (a pool without one gets a price built from its equity and profit, so deposits do not count as return), weighted by the pools' TVL. It is not annualised and it is not the exchange's own APR.
Where do fees and revenue come from?
From DefiLlama, each exchange's perps listing only, so spot trading is not in them; DefiLlama revises past days and the whole series is read again every night. Hyperliquid's fees include its HIP-3 markets, which its volume here does not, so fees per volume reads high for it.
What can a formula do?
Combine the metric names (vol, oi, tvl, share, share_oi, mkts, vtvl, vret30, cost10k, cost100k, cost1m, fees, rev) with + − * / ^ and brackets, and the functions ma, sum, chg, lag, cum, abs, log, min and max. It is worked out per exchange and day, and a day with a missing figure stays a gap.
What is day 0?
With “Since launch” the chart counts days from each exchange's own day 0 instead of dates, so exchanges launched years apart start side by side: day 0 is its launch day, a day you pick for it (Own date), or the first day its 7-day average reached a size (First $X). Day 90 is the 90th day after each one's day 0, a different date for each; the hover gives that date.
Why does a line start after day 0?
Our daily figures for that exchange start later than its day 0: before the collector started, a history goes back as far as the exchange's own daily candles and DefiLlama reach. Nothing is filled in before the first figure, and a day without a figure stays a gap. The legend says from which day a line starts and how many days it is missing.
What counts as reaching $100M?
The 7-day average of the metric, taken over at least 3 days with a figure, at or above the size for the first time. An exchange that was already above it on the first day it has an average is not drawn from there, because the day it got there is not known; in the days to milestones it shows as “≤ N”.
